Gndevank

A monastery located in the region north of Sissian, in a side valley off the present road leading to Lake Sevan. The complex is enclosed by a fortified wall with the usual massive semicylindrical towers. The church is dated 999 and has a quatrefoil plan, with a slightly later single-nave, barrel-vaulted forebuilding. At the top of the external triangular niches are carved characteristic small heads, while inside the drum unusual triangular stone elements protrude. Of special elegance are some finely carved khatchkars placed beside the entrance door of the church. The monastery is now being restored.
