Hayravank on Sevan
This monastery is situated on the shore of Lake Sevan near the village of Kamo, in the western part of the Siounik region. It consists of a church, a chapel and a “gavit”. The church, cross-shaped in plan, was built at the end of the 9th century and is characterised by its external volume, which faithfully follows the layout and massing of the interior space. A rectangular chapel was added to this building on the south-east side in later periods. The “gavit” dates from the 12th century; larger than the church, as is usual, it is markedly rotated with respect to the east-west axis for topographical reasons, but this results in an architectural fusion of the two buildings.
