Moughni

The church, dedicated to St. George (built between 1664 and 1683), is perhaps the last example of the great architectural season of the Armenian Middle Ages. The exterior is characterised by a typical polychromy obtained, especially in the apse area, by a chequerboard arrangement of red and black tuff ashlars. The decorative apparatus, with its extremely minute motifs, is skilfully concentrated around the main openings, creating a striking contrast with the perfectly smooth masonry. In front of the church is a large portico with a small bell tower above it. The dome has an umbrella roof, as is typical of the later examples.
