Crypt of San Biagio

Beneath the present cemetery church (by the graveyard near the fork between the village of Serra S. Abbondio and the road leading to the abbey of Fonte Avellana), an 8th-century crypt known as the “Crypt of St. Blaise” is recorded. It is at present closed and cannot be visited: it appears to be a space made up of three rooms, two side rooms ending in semicircular apses that rise about 60 centimetres above the ground, and a central room, into which the recent entrance door opens and through which 4 square piers of different shapes can be glimpsed: the vaults are not visible: the supports bear black marks, perhaps due to a fire. The two side rooms are in any case separated from the central one but communicate with it through openings made in the sides of the central room, which preserves an altar on the side diametrically opposite the recent door opening.
