The sculptor's attention is directed so intensely to the face that other parts seem hardly to interest him and are resolved in a conventional manner. But there would be little to add to the disquieting presence, the extraordinary eloquence of this elderly man's head, hollowed by creases of shadow that seem to transcribe tangibly the artist's penetrating gaze.
