Bernini Gian Lorenzo
Innocent X
Perhaps only Velázquez, though starting from opposite stylistic premises, could, in the same years as Bernini, show portraits in which subtlety of analysis, lucid, merciless, is joined to a direct power of communication; the sign of an immediate relationship, almost physical, between the artist and his model. The thin mask of Pamphili reveals not so much a face as a mind, a will.
