Charity
The other statues of the two funerary complexes of Silvestro and Luisa Aldobrandini were executed by the Lorrainer Nicolas Cordier, known in Rome as Franciosino, who was very active in the first decade of the seventeenth century. Like Mariani, he supplied sculptures of some importance (two Saints and two Prophets) for the Cappella Paolina in Santa Maria Maggiore. If in all the other figures of the two tombs, coldly composed, and above all in the matronly image of Luisa, he did not depart from the wearily Renaissance spirit that informs Giacomo della Porta's architectural design, in the Charity he displayed livelier, more buoyant humours, to which Mariani's suggestions were certainly not alien, but still more the naturalistic roots of his northern training.
