Temperance

Completed in 1339, the tomb of the Dominican Peter of Verona brought the artist, transplanted to Lombardy, the highest fame. Structurally it recalls the Bolognese arca of St. Domenico, but the sculpture aims at quite different expressive values. Above all in the caryatid-Virtues, the subtle rhythms, with its abstract graphic preciousness, evoke figures of an aristocratic spirituality.
