Madonna Enthroned

Arnolfo devoted the last years of his life to the new Cathedral in Florence, both as architect and sculptor. He planned to cover the façade with a dense incrustation of mosaics, reliefs, and statues. This noble Madonna was to be the pivot, the final glorification of clear and absolute proportion, of slow and majestic rhythms, in a supreme celebration of the intrinsic dignity of plastic design.
