A prophet

It is now commonplace to see in the fearful expressive ardour of Giovanni Pisano a distant prelude to Michelangelo's impassioned expression in the Sistine Chapel. Whether or not such comparisons are justified, there is no doubt that in the late work of the Pisan master the vehemence of idiom and plastic conciseness set examples that were to serve as a point of comparison for many generations.
