Discussion has been wide (and fantastic) on the origin of this theme that assumes so central a position in Marini's work. The sculptor's psychological motivations have been explored; critics have suggested Tang ceramics, and the horsemen of Bamberg Cathedral and on Gothic mausoleums, and naturally Donatello's and Verrocchio's great Renaissance monuments.
