Gemito Vincenzo
Pensive Boy
Perhaps no other artist, not even Bernini at his most inventive, ever possessed Gemito's “capacity for representation”: a Neapolitan man of the people to the marrow, instinctive, of a primordial, one might say Edenic, sensibility. And at the same time extremely refined, infallible in capturing the figurative data that tradition, in its widest chronological span, from the Greeks to Michelangelo and Caravaggio, could offer him.
