Large Bather n. 1
The work of formal abstraction becomes more complex in the figures that unwind elegantly in a dynamic relationship with a serenely free, ideally infinite space. The bather is a typical figure of Greco's poetic world, to which he has returned again and again, attracted by the inexhaustible expressive possibilities of the motif, which, in its complex sobriety, may therefore well sum up the poetic meanings of that world. The methodical fluidity of the line conditions the measured, wave-like expansion of volumes and surfaces, so that the sinuous closing of one movement immediately sustains a new cadence, which echoes, varies and amplifies the first. The rhythmic articulation of the forms, with the abstraction it entails, confers a sunlit absoluteness on the vibrant sensuality of the modelling.
