Very soon, however, the fascination of narrative, of immediate and concrete meaning, regained the upper hand in the sculptor's imagination. Naturally, however, the articulated tension of the imaginative forms settled into the new expressionistic naturalism. The sharp thrust of the old profiles is enriched by violent contrasts of light and shade, and the material takes on the mark of a dramatic anguish.
