Thorvaldsen Bertel
The Three Graces
The Danish sculptor was often contrasted with Canova as the genuine interpreter of Neoclassical academicism; Thorvaldsen, in fact, always proved faithful to an intellectual conventionalism, and his detachment from life led him to emphasis and rhetoric: in his world of Apollonian phantoms, impenetrable and mute, feelings, pain as well as voluptuousness, lack deep resonance.
