Dupré's academic-verist ambiguity, thanks to its undeniable qualities of elegance and the subtle cultural suggestions he was able to hint at, ended up conditioning sculpture, in Tuscany, for many decades. This ambiguity readily cloaked itself in pietistic appearances; but the apparent simplicity of language cannot mask the substantial lack of religious inspiration.
