It is quite true that the Milanese artists around 1870 were also somehow caught up in the enthusiastic infatuation with scientific progress and with the new possibilities it could offer to art as well. But their reaction was essentially polemical, still inspired by the Romantic concept of the individuality of the artist, a creator of dreams to which the common herd cannot be admitted.
