Mazzoni Guido
Pietà
The old medieval tradition of sculptural groups depicting “sacred representations”, documented practically throughout Italy but particularly alive in the Po Valley, was continued by Mazzoni, who was likewise indebted to the iconography of Flemish retables. Compared with Niccolò’s lyrical violence, these images appear marked by a descriptive and insistent naturalism, full-bodied and alive with a sincere emotional intensity.
