The touching realism has become a conventional mimicking in the facial features. This mediocre sculpture by a great architect takes us back to the medieval pietistic tradition, albeit in the already belated form of naturalistic imitation. But the melodramatic elements are redeemed by a certain rugged energy and simplicity.
