Capital – Colonnette with Capital, from Santa Maria d'Aurona
The juxtaposition of two fragments found in the same religious building clearly documents the composite nature of early medieval art, aimed more at recovering outmoded traditions than at creating an original expressive civilization, as well as the frequent reuse of earlier pieces (in the same building): one shows a type of schematic, incised decoration, perhaps of the 8th century; the other indulges in a fuller and more contrasted relief.
