Gospel Book Cover, known as Aribert's
Among the late manifestations of the Lombard school of enamelwork, this distinguished eleventh-century work of goldsmith's art has one side sumptuously decorated with enamels and gems, while the other side, a detail of which is reproduced here, allows a more precise sculptural assessment. It combines iconographic types of Byzantine and Ottonian derivation in an original, if not homogeneous, formula.
