The Flight into Egypt

The solemn nobility and restraint of the figures does nothing to diminish the persuasiveness and immediacy of the narrative. In Antelami's art, these values tend to prevail over the symbolic ones, imparting to his sculpture the humble and privileged task of telling with simplicity the stories of eternal life. It has been questioned whether Antelami is responsible for the two maidservants, whose naturalism is more direct.
