Lunette with the Legend of the Tree of Life

The subdued tone of the previous scene, underlined by the bare submissiveness of the little donkey, finds its counterpoint in other scenes in a flowering of ornamental motifs of exuberant splendour: yet the plastic relief, the broad and free spacing and the absence of any academic flourish always reveal the artist’s firm hand and his consistency with the fundamental themes of his inspiration.
