On the back of the altar, which illustrates events from the life of St. Ambrose (it also bears the signature of the maker, Vuolvinius), remarkable spatial and environmental effects are achieved with sober means, there are concise and touching descriptive notes, and the sense of the action caught at its climax is always kept alive.
