Eugenia
Eugenia, or Eugenia Caryphillata, more commonly known as clove, grows in the Molucca Islands, the Antilles and Madagascar.
It is widely used in cooking but has analgesic, healing, and antiseptic properties. In fact it is much used by dentists.
But its properties (and they are many) fit brilliantly into a discussion of the problems of love and sex.
It certainly has a general tonic effect and, not being toxic, can be used safely. Indeed, it is such a powerful antiseptic that, when the Dutch destroyed all the Eugenia trees in the Molucca Islands, the country was devastated by several epidemics unknown until then.
But let us come to our subject and see how to use Eugenia above all to seduce someone in whom we are particularly interested but who seems a little cold and reluctant.
They are called "Little Devils, or aphrodisiac pastilles of Naples" and must be prepared by an expert herbalist, but they have a surprising effect if offered to a person who is too reserved and aloof.
This is the recipe:
Sugar 500 parts
Mastic 12 parts
Saffron 8 parts
Musk 1 part
Ginger 2 parts
Eugenia 2 parts
Ambergris 4 parts
Infusion of marum as required.
These are pleasant pastilles to be dissolved in the mouth, at a dose of 4 or 5 a day.
Eugenia essence is also excellent for preparing special toothpastes and mouthwashes which make the breath extremely fragrant and can be one more source of charm and sexual attraction.
