Hercules and Cacus

A restorer of ancient marbles, Maderno, in all his vast commercial production, was never able to conceal under his remarkable academic virtuosity the substantial coldness of his invention. He combines elements of the Greco-Roman tradition, brought up to date, with a superficial renewal of quattrocento motifs or empty stylistic gestures of Michelangelesque origin.
