Girl Filled with Love
After a visit to Munich, Martini seems to address with more conscious refinement the problem of an idiom purged of all anecdotal verism and superficial pictorialism, in order to rediscover the solemn structure of the statue. If in the Prostitute he drew on heavy popular and primordial moods, accentuated by an impressionistic vein, in the Girl Filled with Love the cultural reworking is even more complex, presupposing the subtle elegance of Art Nouveau, especially of decorative objects, in the supple delicacy of its undulating lines; but at the same time the image does not renounce a singularly sharp expressive characterization, and in the extreme simplification of the volumes, in the cylindrical drum of the neck and in the incised facial features, a highly personal reworking of Greek sculpture takes shape.
