Agostino di Duccio
Putti Playing
Compared with the putti of Donatello's Cantoria or that of Luca della Robbia, these abbreviated silhouettes of gnomes seem cut out and pasted on the background like whimsical and highly refined droleries or like Byzantine ivory carvings. The naturalistic suggestions are a pretext to invent abstractions, and all expressive elements are immediately translated into decorative formulas.
