Neroccio di Bartolomeo Landi
Saint Catherine of Siena
The classical-style designs and the characters of realism in Siena are grouped into a spirit of Gothic nostalgia, in a culture of mysticism that can lead to the two extremes of abstract rhythm and a pathetic accentuation. In this way Neroccio used the examples of the art of Jacopo della Quercia and Donatello in this lively image, the conventional movement of the figure culminating in the acute, psychological individualization of the face.
